Miami Heat 97, Chicago Bulls 100
The Bulls beat the defending champs for the third time this season, but not without a price: Center Ben Wallace sprained his left knee with five minutes left in the game and is now listed day-to-day. "We just hope he's going to be all right." said Kirk Hinrich. "I guess the worst case, if he doesn't play, then everybody else has to step up." Hinrich proved he can do his part, posting 26 Chicago points while denying Dwayne Wade a single score until 4 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Ben Gordon shined with 34 points and 7 assists; reserve Andres Nocioni added 19. Wallace's injury comes on the heels of a Bulls' winning streak but with a seven-game road-trip ahead and the Bulls just 6-13 away from the United Center, fingers crossed for a speedy Wallace recovery. Meanwhile, the guy who knows knee problems, Shaquille O'Neal, watched from the bench tonight as his team lost for the fifth time in six games. According to the AP, Miami doesn't want to risk him playing consecutive days, but seeing him on the sidelines stretched out in that Laz-E-Boy holding a remote makes ya wonder.
Portland Trailblazers 135, Memphis Grizzlies 132
Whoops. With a timeout at 28 seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 111, streamers were released from the rafters of the FedExForum, part of every Grizzlies postgame win. And now part of at least one postgame loss. Zach Randolph, taking a team-high 40 shots, scored a career-high 42 points and grabbed 12 rebounds leading the Trail Blazers over the Grizzlies in a double OT hoopfest. "I didn't have any idea how many shots I had taken," Randolph said. "They told me after the game, and I was like, 'What?' When you're in that zone, you don't think about it." He got some help from Memphis, which squandered a 16-point lead in the second half, allowing a 15-3 Portland run to tie at the end of the regulation. That kind of comeback is what's different about Portland this season, Randolph said: "Last year, we would have lost a game like this by 30," he said. Grizzly Center Pau Gazol was reflective: "Get me the hell outta here, would ya? Like NOW?"
Sacramento Kings 104, Dallas 106
Chicago's surprise win Thursday over Dallas left a taste in Coach Avery Johnson's mouth not unlike two-day-old unrefrigerated clams. Telling his team he "burned the tape" of the game, the Mavs knew there couldn't be two in a row and rallied in the fourth quarter to best the Kings. Mavs' Jason Terry had 18 points, Jerry Stackhouse contributed 16, Devin Harris added 14 points and six assists, Josh Howard 13 points and seven rebounds. Oh yeah, and Dirk Nowitzki had 32 points, 11 rebounds and his 8th straight double-double. "This was a gutsy performance," Johnson said. "It really showed me what these men are made of." That's a relief, cuz who knows what he would have burned next.
