Bears Saying Goodbye to Rivera

In a move that will shock some fans but few insiders, the Chicago Bears have decided to not renew the contract of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera.

According to Fox Sports,

Team sources say that Smith and Rivera met recently and agreed to allow Rivera to pursue other opportunities. The sources also contend that Smith will likely end up promoting Bob Babich from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator.
Rivera, a lead contender for promotion somewhere in the NFL, was considered a short-timer with the Bears. Fox Sports writes that Lovie Smith will promote Babich because he's someone who will be there for the long haul.

Babich coached collegiate ball for nearly two decades before joining Chicago in 2004.

This news comes the same day the San Diego Chargers inexplicably hired Norv "I Destroyed the Redskins" Turner as their head coach. Rivera had interviewed for that position and several other NFL head coaching slots in the last few weeks but has been passed over every time.

So Ron trades the frigid climate of Chicago for the sudden chill of career uncertainty. Given his talent, it should warm up pretty fast. But the question is, will this news prompt some teams to more seriously start courting him?
