New Year's Day Update

There have been a few news stories today worthy of writing about, besides the bowl games.

  • Death in Denver-Just hours after the Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs, 24-year old cornerback Darrent Williams was gunned down in a drive-by shooting. A vehicle pulled up alongside Williams' stretch Hummer limo and sprayed it with bullets. As many as a dozen bullet holes were seen on the limo.
  • Knight gets #880-The Texas Tech Red Raiders beat New Mexico 70-68 in Lubbock this afternoon to get Bob Knight his record 880th win as a men's college basketball coach.
  • The coaching carousel's begun-The Arizona Cardinals were tired of the Dennis Green experiment, so they canned his ass today. The Cardinals went 5-11 this season. Also in Atlanta, Jim Mora Jr. was fired by the Falcons after a 7-9 season. Personally, we feel that Mora wanted out of Atlanta. Are we the only one? First his father goes on a national radio show and calls Mike Vick a "coach killer" and then Mora himself goes on a radio station in Washington and talks about how he would leave the Falcons in a heartbeat to coach the Huskies. Seems a bit planned to us.
  • Saban to Alabama?-It's been long rumored, but today Alabama will make an official offer to Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban. We're sure glad that Saban turned down the Chicago Bears job a few seasons ago, and we had to go with option #2, Lovie Smith.
  • Penn State 20 Tennessee 10-Penn State was able to record the first win of the bowl season for the Big Ten this morning with their "upset" of Tennessee. Joe Paterno coached from the press box, and Tony Hunt led the way for the Nittany Lions with 158 yards on the ground. Anthony Morelli threw for 197 yards and a touchdown, while Tony Davis returned a fumble 88 yards in the fourth quarter for a touchdown that decided the game.
  • Auburn 17 Nebraska 14-Auburn won in a defensive struggle, though at times we weren't sure whether it was defense or hungover offense. Auburn managed 177 total yards (compared to Nebraska's 229) and won on a third quarter field goal. It was pretty boring.
  • Wisconsin 17 Arkansas 14 4th Quarter-Arkansas just scored a touchdown to get within three as we're typing this. This is one of the matchups we've been looking forward to the most, and so far it's been enjoyable. Even with Paul Maguire in the booth.
  • West Virginia 38 Georgia Tech 35 Third Quarter-We aren't paying much attention to this game, but based on the fact the Mountaineers have scored 21 straight points in the third quarter to take the lead, we may have to start.

Update: Both the Wisconsin/Arkansas and West Virginia/Georgia Tech scores are now finals.

Ballhype: hype it up!
