Now listen to me.
Rex Grossman sucks.
Maybe not in the long haul. Sure, he's still got potential to get better.
But potential isn't going to win you a Super Bowl.
Grossman has played barely more than a dozen professional games in his career. His mechanics stink right now and if he knows the playbook, he seems hellbent on ignoring it.
Even Grossman can't defend his play. Dear God, Lovie, Rexy is practically begging you to take him out:
"I just am so confused why I do some of the things I do. It just doesn't make any sense to me. It's not a matter of confidence. It's more of, what is making me do these things?"
He sounds more like a repentant serial killer than a quarterback.
Face it, Lovie, the Bears have won despite Grossman, not because of him. How many defensive and special teams touchdowns do you think they can score?
Supporters of your approach say the schedule will prove you right in the end. But that's a laughable argument. Who cares if you reach the playoffs with a great record if you can't hold up against good teams when it matters?
And it's not like you don't have a viable alternative.
Brian Griese is a seasoned vet. In 2004, he led the Buccaneers to their only wins of the season and had a 5-1 record in 2005 before succumbing to a torn ACL.
Let's be honest here.
We're not looking for a playmaker. We're just looking for someone who won't screw up.
The remainder of the regular season schedule is undemanding, perfect for Griese. Reintroduce him to the turf, get the rust off the hinges, all in time for the playoffs.
C'mon, Lovie, you know you can do it...
Of course, you're scared, who isn't? But if you need a shot of courage, look no further than Bill Parcells, who had the smarts to realize changes were necessary and the cojonoes to make them. He's been rewarded handsomely for his decision.
Yeah, I know, on the other side of the coin, demoting Jake Plummer doesn't look like such a genius move right now. But here's the thing: Shanahan tossed off a veteran for Jay Cutler, an untested rookie.
You don't have that problem.
With Griese you know what you've got.
And if you're honest with yourself, you know what you've got with Grossman too.
The clock is ticking...
