Introducing Lou Piniella's Replacement

Goodness. Two posts involving the Cubs in one day! Looks like all that money the team has been spending this offseason is already starting to pay off.

Anyway...

The Cubs announced today that former second baseman and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg has been hired as manager for the Peoria Chiefs. The Chiefs are the Cubs Single-A affiliate.

Sandberg was named Tuesday as the manager for the Cubs' Class A Peoria Chiefs. Sandberg follows his former Cubs teammate Jody Davis, who managed the Chiefs for one season and was assigned to the Class A Daytona team for 2007.

Sandberg was a late candidate for the Cubs' vacancy and interviewed with general manager Jim Hendry after the team decided not to renew Dusty Baker's contract. Hendry told the Hall of Fame second baseman that he was looking for someone with more managing experience, and the Cubs named Lou Piniella in October.
Back in October, Sandberg talked about getting into managing in the Chicago Sun-Times.

"It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit. I'm at a stage in my life where that is something I want to do. For me, the ideal situation is to manage the Cubs. That would obviously be the ultimate dream job for me."
It's enough to make you wonder what Ryno's ex-wife is thinking here. Think about it. The Peoria Chiefs is one of the few teams in baseball she hasn't slept with.
