This and That 2/8/06

  • The NFL defended it's officials. Surprise!!!
  • What are the odds Rick Tocchet is going to be in big time trouble?
  • The new Monday Night Football crew has been announced, and I think it could be good. I enjoy Mike Tirico as a play by play guy on ESPN college football games, and Kornheiser is smart enough and witty enough to distract me from Theismann's 45 minute soliloquy on how perfect Tom Brady's last pass was, but that Joe would have done it better. I just hope Kornheiser can stay awake for the end of the games. (He says he hasn't seen the end of a MNF game in 25 years)
  • A lot of people, including myself, gave Peyton Manning crap for what he said about his offensive line after the loss to Pittsburgh. Look who is coming to his defense though.
  • Phil Jackson is taking the Holmgren route to explain why his team lost. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact Brian Cook was the Lakers leading scorer.
  • Speaking of the Lakers, #23 has some things to say about #8's 81 point performance. No telling what he means when he says he "Could play when he wants to."
  • Cubs fans, apparently this isn't Maddux's last season either.
  • White Sox are going to the White House.
  • The Washington Nationals have apparently made a Major League contract offer to Sammy Sosa. It's one year, and incentive laden.

  1. "Manager Ozzie Guillen, who long ago planned a vacation to the Dominican Republic, will not attend the ceremony."

C'MON. more along the lines of not wanting to piss off hugo chavez.

as for tony kornheiser, been reading him since (ahem, cough, cough) in the washington post. he's a great columnist and did a lot of radio in DC before ESPN. a funny, smart guy. should be interesting.

as a skins fan, probably a little biased about thiesmann but i think he's a good choice - to my mind, always had interesting stuff to say during the Sunday games. (and hey, he picked lovie as coach of the year.)

  2. Listen, I love Notre Dame. Joe Theismann went to Notre Dame. I love players at Notre Dame. I hate Joe Theismann.

    Do the math.

He was part of the Triumverate of Idiocy that was ESPN Sunday Night Football the last few seasons, and I hate the fact he will help kill MNF for me.

Also Theismann voted for Lovie, but only cuz he couldn't vote for himself.

  3. no argument about ESPN sunday night. i've spent more time marvelling at the idiocy of paul maguire and mike patrick than any footplay play that happened to be on while they were babbbling.

but i'm betting you're going to change your tune about theismann once he's teamed with competent cohosts in the booth.

and yeah, he's a touch egomaniacal but i would think a "25 year old Self Described Genius" would respect that. :)

  4. Theismann is Captain Obvious. It's an annoying trend among sportscasters in that they generally cater to the person who has no idea what they are watching and forget that for every 1 of those people there are 500,000 others who already know and get annoyed at it. Oh really?! Touchdowns are worth 6 points huh?

Then don't even get me started on Joe changing his mind DURING games. Like saying Kyle Orton should be the starter for the Bears all week leading up to the Bears/Falcons game and then in the third quarter lauding the brilliance of Lovie for bringing in Grossman.

Least when I take a side on something I stick to my feelings, wrong as they may be.

  6. I didn't.

"and yeah, he's a touch egomaniacal but i would think a "25 year old Self Described Genius" would respect that. :)"

    YOU DID.

  7. so, ultimately.... this is about me.

    as it should be.

as for theismann and orton/grossman.... weren't you kind of saying the same thing? that pulling out orton was a mistake cuz grossman would just get injured again and orton's confidence would be shaken? then you ended up lauding lovie after?

(i honestly may be wrong about this, my old brain may be addled)

  8. No, I never said dont do it. I just questioned the logic behind why so many people thought it was the answer. Chemistry is a quirky thing you don't really wanna mess with, though there wasn't much with Orton. My main concern is that people were treating Grossman like some kind of messiah when he's only played in 6 games up to that point in a 3 year career.

Also completely off subject, a radio guy here in CHicago who's in Honolulu for the Pro Bowl spoke to a Bear player who wanted to be anonymous about the Bears QB situation. That players analysis? (paraphrase) "I think Kyle will win the starting job from Rex next season and grow into a great quarterback."

I don't know what to think about that, all I know is I'm more than a little scared.

  9. that is a bit scary.

and btw, wondering: how long "anonymous" can remain anonymous?

feels a little like CLUE: vasher in the dining room with the candlestick...
