In Brief: Some Guy Not Named Tiger Woods Wins The Masters

I'm not knowledgeable enough about golf to write an entire post about it, but I do feel compelled to let you all know that some guy named Trevor Immelman won The Masters yesterday (And though I don't know golf that well, I know Immelman's swing is a thing of absolute beauty). I'd never heard of Immelman before this weekend, but I think we all know who he is now.

A lot of the focus will of course be on the fact that Tiger Woods didn't win the tournament, and now has no chance of completing the Grand Slam, and it's not really fair. Sure, Immelman's competition didn't exactly make it too tough on him as they all choked down the stretch, but that doesn't mean Immelman's play was any less worthy. In fact, it was the opposite.

As Brandt Snedeker, Steve Flesch, and even the great Tiger Woods choked away chance after chance to catch him, Immelman kept his calm and played solid golf throughout Sunday to earn he green jacket.

Also, just because Tiger didn't win doesn't mean that this was a bad day for the PGA. They may have finally found a new player to compete with Woods, as they finally have a major champion still in his 20's in Immelman.

In Brief: A.J. For MVP!

I know we're only a week into the season, and any talk about MVP's or even who's going to win the division is completely asinine, but asinine opinions is what I do best. After the first six games of the season, A.J. Pierzynski is absolutely tearing it up.

He's slimmed down a bit this season, and he's no longer trying to hit every pitch 500 feet. The results so far?

He's hitting .500 with with an OBP of .565 and is slugging 1.000. He has two home runs, four doubles, seven runs driven in, and he's scored 7 runs as well.

It's never too early to start the campaign, people.

In Brief: Stay Away, Brett

Yesterday the Los Angeles Times reported that Brett Favre's agent has been in contact with teams not named the Green Bay Packers to see if they'd be interested in the recently retired quarterback. Both Favre and his agent deny the story, but really, would you be shocked if Favre came out of retirement? A part of me is hoping he does because you know it would cause half the population of Green Bay to kill themselves, while the rest just rock in a chair muttering "Why, Brett? Why?" for the rest of their lives.

Just as long as he doesn't sign with the Bears. I'm not sure my brain would know how to cope with that.

In Brief: Kenny Williams Won A Trade

Starting today here on Foul Balls, I'll be introducing a new kind of post that you're not used to seeing here. You see, with baseball season starting, a lot more of my time is going to be used for my duties at FanHouse. Which means I have less time to write here. Since writing this blog and having you wonderful people read it is what got me the job at FanHouse, I don't want to rob you dedicated few who need your daily fix. So I'm introducing a new recurring feature here called "In Brief." The premise is simple: I don't have time to write about every story I'd like to here, but I'm a megalomaniac who feels the need to share his opinion on everything because it's the right opinion and I'm awesome. So what I'll be doing is writing quick little one paragraph posts in which I ditch all that writer bullshit, and just get straight to the point. I get to express my opinions, and you don't have to stare at the same post for three hours. Everybody wins!

Oddly enough, the first In Brief will be about a subject I actually planned on writing a whole post about today, but then I discovered that John Renneke at Bugs & Cranks (John does a good job covering the Sox over there, so if you aren't already, I recommend you Sox fans make it another one of your daily stops.) beat me to it.

After Nick Masset's performance on Monday, and the way John Danks pitched yesterday, it's time I gave Kenny Williams some credit. I've spent the last few months ripping Kenny for every move he has or hasn't made. I was somewhat confused when Kenny traded Brandon McCarthy to Texas for Danks and Masset before last season, especially when the Sox had been telling us in 2006 how B-Mac was the next Jack McDowell and heir apparent to the 5th spot in the rotation.

Turns out Kenny just might have known what he's doing. So far this season Danks and Masset have combined for 11IP, 4 hits, no runs, 10 strikeouts, and only 2 walks. McCarthy? He's currently on the 60-day disabled list after missing a lot of time due to injury last season as well.
