My Final Blogpoll Ballot

Due to some technical difficulties in the voting process for the Blogpoll, I cannot post a nice HTML ballot entry here for you to read. So what I will do is give you a rundown of my final top 5, as appeared on the ballot I just turned in not five minutes ago.

  1. USC
  2. LSU
  3. Georgia
  4. Missouri
  5. Ohio State
As for other schools of interest, I had Illinois finishing up at #14, and Michigan jumping as high as #12.

As for why I chose USC over LSU as my #1, it's not just because of the ass-whooping they gave to Illinois. I'm not using it as an excuse for the Illini's performance. It's just that I didn't really view last night's game as the true national championship, and last I checked, the Blogpoll isn't obligated to name that game's winner as it's #1.

I just feel that if there were a playoff system in college football, that USC would have come out on top in the end. It's simple math really. USC beats Illinois by a billion, whom beat Ohio State by 14, who in turn lost to LSU by 14.

So USC is still 999,999,985 points ahead of LSU.

Oh, and even though I think Georgia would beat LSU on a neutral field right now, the fact that they didn't win their division or conference is held against them.

Slow Starts Can Kill A Team

The biggest reason I was excited about this Bulls season getting started was that there would finally be something to say about the Bulls that didn't have something to do with Kobe Bryant. After watching this team play it's first three games, I think I'd rather talk about Kobe again.

I know the Bulls are notoriously slow starters under Scott Skiles, but losing to Philly at home? Losing to Milwaukee on the road? It's not just the fact that this team is losing either, it's how horrible they've looked while doing it. It's one thing to play well, and come up short in the end, but when you've been playing horribly for three games, that's worrisome.

Something's not right here.

I don't know whether it's the fact that the Kobe talks have become a distraction for this team, or if Luol and Ben Gordon have their contracts on their minds, but this team just looks lazy right now.

Through the first three games, the Bulls are shooting 38% from the field. Joe Smith is the only player on the team making half of his shots, but he's only taken 14. Ben Gordon is shooting at a 39% clip, Luol comes in at 43%, and Kirk Hinrich is at 34%. I think Hinrich has as many fouls as he does assists right now: 15. As a team, they're scoring only 86.7 points a game, which isn't going to lead to many wins in this league.

So what's to blame? Is it just rust? Distractions? Does this team really need Kobe?

It's none of those.

It's the Cubs.

They've cursed this entire city! Their "success" this season has killed everybody else. The White Sox were supposed to be good again this season, and they blew. The Bears were supposed to get back to the Super Bowl, and they're in last place.

Nothing's going right in Chicago!

Okay, so it's probably not the Cubs fault, but while the city of Boston is having a fantastic sports season, Chicago's falling flat on it's face everywhere you look. Sure the Cubs got to the playoffs, but they couldn't even manage to win a game before bowing out quickly.

So really, I have no idea what's wrong with the Bulls right now. Do I think that we'd have a better record if Kobe were here? Yeah, but I don't think his absence is what's causing the problems either. I'm hoping that this will all prove to be just another slow start for this team, and they'll get rolling sooner rather than later, but these slow starts are still killers.

Look at last season for example. In the Bulls first twelve games they managed to go 3-9 before going on a seven-game win streak to get over .500. But had the Bulls just managed to go 6-6 in those twelve games last season, they'd have finished the season 52-30 with the #2 seed in the East. That means they'd have had the same easy route to the Eastern Conference Finals that the Cavs took.

Had they gone 7-5 they'd have had home-court advantage in the playoffs.

So while an 0-3 start in an 82 game season isn't going to kill a team, it could end up hurting them quite a bit at the end of the season.

Foul Balls

In The Navy - I had said during Spread Em last week that I didn't think the Irish could cover a 3.5 point spread against Navy, and that I had no confidence in this team. Still, I don't think I ever really thought they'd lose the game.

I've never been more embarrassed to be a Notre Dame fan than I was on Saturday afternoon. That was just.....I don't even know. It was bad. I can understand why the Irish lose to teams like Michigan, Penn State, Boston College, USC, and Georgia Tech because they're all better teams with more talented players. Navy does not have more talent than Notre Dame.

Though that didn't seem to matter on Saturday, did it?

I've tortured myself all season by watching every Irish game, but after this weekend, I think I'm going to have to take the rest of the season off. If for no other reason than my sanity.

Purple Jesus - I probably shouldn't be enjoying the exploits of a Minnesota Viking as much as I am right now, but I don't care. I love Adrian Peterson. I don't care if he's a Viking and that he'll be torturing the Bears twice a season for the foreseeable future. He's on my fantasy team!! And since it's a keeper league, I have him for two more season after this one.

So I look forward to more performances like the one he had on Sunday against the Chargers. The Messiah broke the NFL's single game rushing mark with 296 yards yesterday. No, you didn't read that wrong, he actually rushed for 296 yards in one game. That included three touchdown runs, a one-yarder, a 46-yarder, and a 64-yarder. That's 35 points for my fantasy team right there.

The Vikings are only halfway through their season, but Peterson has already eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark, which puts him on pace to finish the season with over 2,000 yards. And to think, the Vikings didn't draft him until the 7th spot. I wonder what the Raiders think about taking JaMarcus Russell with the first pick now.

What's even crazier is that in two games against the Bears and Chargers-two teams that are supposed to have strong run defenses-Peterson has rushed for 520 yards and seven touchdowns. In eight games this season, Cedric Benson has rushed for 466 yards and two touchdowns. Just in case you didn't realize how bad Cedric Benson sucks.

That Patriots/Colts Game - I was at work on Thursday and a co-worker of mine told me that "Take the over this Sunday, man. Easiest money you'll ever make." My response? "Actually, I think it's going to be a 24-20 type game. I'm taking the under." "You're an idiot, man."

Who's the idiot now, man?

It was a very good game, and though it would have been impossible to live up to it's hype without aliens landing at the RCA Dome in the third quarter, the game didn't disappoint. The Colts had plenty of chances to win this game, but their failures in the red zone early came back to haunt them.

The question is, now that they've gotten the Colts out of the way, what's to stop the Patriots from going undefeated? They've got a bye next week, but after that, there isn't much to stand in their way. At Buffalo, Philadelphia, at Baltimore, Pittsburgh, the Jets, Miami, and finally on the road against the Giants.

The Steelers and Giants are the only threats, and I don't think they pose much of one.

Spread Em: College Football Week 10

During the college football season I'll be taking a look at each game on the Big Ten schedule, along with Notre Dame and any other national matchups of my choosing. I will then do my best to pretend I have any inkling what I'm doing, as I pick which team will cover the spread and why. So let's just get to the losses!

Indiana vs. Ball State (+7) -
The Hoosiers got off to a nice start this season, but the Big Ten has been unkind to them, as they've lost three in a row. They get a week off from conference play, but Ball State is no pushover. They played Illinois tough in Champaign, and they won't make it easy for Indiana to reach bowl eligibility on Saturday.

Northwestern vs. Iowa (+1.5) - Iowa's shown this season that they can stop good Big Ten offenses, and Northwestern's offense is good at times, but it's not great. I'm pretty confident the Hawkeyes will take this one outright.

Penn State (-7) vs. Purdue - I just don't know which Penn State team is going to come out and play on Saturdays this season. The defense always seems to show up, but my hatred of Anthony Morelli still burns because of his inconsistency. Just give the ball to Kinlaw. He'll tear through Purdue's defense. Since they're at home, I'll go with the Nittany Lions.

#1 Ohio State (-16) vs. #24Wisconsin -
I hope Wisconsin enjoys its week back in the blog poll, because they won't be there next week. No matter what changes in Columbus, as long as Jim Tressel's there, this team just keeps winning. The only thing standing between them and the title game is Michigan, well, unless they realize that and go to sleep in this game. Which they never do.

Michigan State vs. #11 Michigan (-4) -
Chad Henne and Mike Hart should be playing in this game, and Michigan should end up winning. Forget the two losses to start the season, Michigan's still better than everybody else in the Big Ten not named Ohio State. The Spartans meanwhile are 1-4 in the Big Ten, and giving up 34 points a game.

Minnesota vs. Illinois (-12) - Minnesota is HORRIBLE. PUTRID. Notre Dame would be favored by 7 against them. Really for the Illini, this will be nothing but a glorified scrimmage.

Notre Dame (-3.5) vs. Navy - Holy shit! Notre Dame is favored this week! What the hell is going on? Sure, it's Navy, and I don't think they've beaten Notre Dame since they were still using wooden boats, but have you seen Notre Dame this season? I make this pick with absolutely no confidence. This is nothing but a hope and a prayer.

Georgia Tech vs. #12 Virginia Tech (+3.5) - Hey, if you're gonna watch it tonight, may as well bet on it! I haven't seen much of Georgia Tech this season, but I've seen plenty of Virginia Tech. Based on that, I will assume their technical abilities are superior to their Georgian brethren, and I'll take the points.

#4 Oregon (-7.5) vs. #6 Arizona State - I am now officially drinking the Pac-10 Kool-Aid. Based on what I've seen this season, the Pac-10 is officially the best conference in the country. And that's with USC losing twice, as well as Cal and UCLA's difficulties. I think Oregon will prove that they're on a higher level than the Sun Devils right now, and a win here could lead to a title game appearance for the Ducks if things fall their way.

Last Week: 4-3

Overall: 48-38

Blogpoll Week 5

This actually came out yesterday, but since I took the day off to turn older, I didn't have a chance to post it. Oh, and because Panger and Alorakid were having their Cubs orgy, and I didn't want to risk catching anything.

As for this week's poll, I don't have many complaints. It looks a lot like the ballot I turned in. Sure, Illinois didn't quite make it, but let's not blame the entire blogosphere for their ignorance. After all, most of them probably couldn't see the game since it was on the Big Ten Network.

Dropped Out: Louisville (#18), Texas A&M (#20), Nebraska (#25).

Well, there's my ballot in the Blogpoll after week four of the college season. I'm going to break it down a little differently this week though.

Top Five
  • USC and LSU stay the same, and I really do consider them both to be 1a and 1b right now. Until either team does something to prove otherwise, they'll be staying in those spots.
  • I moved West Virginia and Oklahoma back above Florida because they did exactly what they were supposed to do against a weaker opponent while Florida struggled a bit with Ole Miss.
The Middle
  • Ohio State has taken over the title of "Best Team in the Big Ten" though I'm not really sure what that means right now.
  • I'm not really sure which of the teams from 10-14 is truly the best between them, but from what I've seen I've been more impressed with Oregon. Though looking at it now, I probably should have put Rutgers below both BC and Clemson.
  • Penn State dropped further than anybody else because Anthony Morelli didn't inspire much confidence against Michigan on Saturday.
The Bottom Five
  • We welcome Arizona State to the Top 25 this week as the Pac-10 looks like they have more than just USC this season. We all knew Cal would be up near the top most of the year, but adding Oregon and ASU to the mix means that USC is going to have to fight to keep their #1 spot.
  • I know Michigan State beat Notre Dame this week, but I don't think that's enough to earn moving up any spots, so they stay at #24 this week.
  • I had about 5 different teams I considered for the 25th spot, but in the end I gave it to Purdue because I'm a Big Ten homer at heart.

Blogpoll Week 3

Technically it's the fifth week of the Blogpoll, but I don't count the first two because they were preseason polls.

As you can see when you compare the Blogpoll to the AP poll, we bloggers like LSU better than USC. We also are willing to admit that Oregon, Boston College, South Florida, and Kentucky are much better than the mainstream voters are ready to admit.

On the other side of that page, we have no where near as much respect for Virginia Tech or Hawaii.

As for my opinions of the poll, I don't have any qualms with it this week. Personally, I think the bloggers know more about what they're doing here than the AP does.

19 Virginia Tech 3
20 Texas A&M 4
21 Hawaii 5

23 Missouri 3
24 Michigan State 2
25 Nebraska 12

Dropped Out: Georgia Tech (#15), UCLA (#16), Tennessee (#18), Arkansas (#19), South Florida (#25).

It should be noted that since I was at my sister's wedding on Saturday, I hardly got to watch any football at all. So my ballot this week is probably a bit off since all I have to go on is what I read about each game.

I knocked Georgia Tech, UCLA, Tennessee, and Arkansas out all because they lost. South Florida I took out because their win over Auburn doesn't look as impressive now that Auburn lost to Mississippi State this weekend.

Alabama and Kentucky are new to the poll this week after big wins over Arkansas and Louisville respectively. I doubt I'm the only person who thought Kentucky would beat Louisville this weekend, but it still came as a surprise to most. Get used to hearing the name Andre Woodson in the coming weeks, because he's making the Wildcats a viable threat in the SEC.

I ranked Ohio State the highest among Big Ten teams, because after an impressive victory on the road against Washington, they deserve it. Penn State had some struggles early against Buffalo, and Wisconsin gave up too many points to The Citadel.

As for Nebraska, a 12 spot drop after losing to USC may be a bit much, but that's just how things worked out.

As always, your thoughts and opinions are welcome in the comments.

Blogpoll Week 2

Earlier this week I posted my ballot for this week's college football Blogpoll, and today Brian at MGoBlog has put the current poll up.

If you want more insight into it, go to MGoBlog for all sorts of goodies. If you just wanna see who's ranked where, keep reading.

As for my thoughts, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who's noticed that Penn State is a top ten team right now. Panger has already given me all sorts of crap for that. Of course, she doesn't have a vote, so her opinion means nothing!

I've no idea who gave Wisconsin a first place vote, but I have $20 that says they live within 20 miles of Madison, Wisconsin.

I also noticed that USC dropped two spots to number three, which I don't agree with. Just because they didn't play last week doesn't mean they aren't as good. I know LSU looked good against Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma killed Miami, but I don't think that makes them better than USC. LSU has more of a case, though.

Another week, and another shuffled ballot. Obviously the biggest story around here is Michigan losing again at home. The good news is that at least they faced a Division-I team this week.

Still, it's become apparent that this team is in some real trouble. They basically quit on themselves in the second half, and I'm not sure how they'll rebound next week. Fortunately for them, they'll be playing another bad team.

Yeah, Notre Dame lost again, but were you really expecting anything different? I already expressed my feelings on the Irish's biggest problem at FanHouse, but I am pleased with the play of Jimmy Clausen thus far. Still, I don't want to waste any more time in this post talking about teams that aren't even on my ballot.

So let's get to the teams that matter.
  • LSU - LSU looked fantastic on Saturday night. I was confident they'd beat Virginia Tech, but I didn't think they'd destroy them. I may have USC at #1 still, but LSU is more a 1a than a 2.
  • Virginia Tech - Speaking of VT, they also happen to fall the furthest in my ballot this week. I dropped them from #9 to #22 as Sean Glennon went out and confirmed my doubts about his ability to lead the Hokie offense. Granted, it was against what could be the best team in the country on the road, but the Hokies looked bad.
  • Oklahoma - After seeing the way they dismantled the Hurricanes, there was just no way I could keep them out of my top five this week. I can't wait for the Oklahoma/Texas game.
  • Penn State - I bumped the Nittany Lions up quite a bit this week. I know they haven't played much in ways of competition, but from what I've seen they're the best team in the Big Ten right now. Anthony Morelli hasn't convinced me of anything yet, but he hasn't made any huge mistakes either.
  • South Florida - I'm not really convinced they're a top 25 team yet, but anytime you can go into Auburn and beat the Tigers, I have to give you some props.
  • South Carolina - Spurrier might be on the verge of making the Gamecocks a real threat after all. Going into Georgia and beating the Bulldogs is a huge win for a program that's struggled against the SEC elite the last few years.
As always, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Dropped Out: Michigan (#4).

Now that we all actually got a chance to see everybody play, it's a lot easier to fill out my ballot. There weren't that many changes to my ballot this week, but teams did move around.

The only team to drop out of my rankings is obviously Michigan. If you lose at home to Appalachian State, you don't deserve to be ranked. I don't think it takes a genius to figure that out. Still, I'd like to thank the Wolverines for lessening the sting of Notre Dame's 33-3 loss. I mean, I wasn't expecting the Irish to win much this season anyway, so knowing that Big Blue's season is already over as well is nice.

As for the rest of the movement.

  • LSU - LSU didn't look like the #2 team in the country for most of their 45-0 win against Mississippi State, but that just shows you how talented they actually are. They don't play well and still win by 45.
  • Texas - I dropped Texas a few spots because, even though they won, they should have beaten Arkansas State a lot worse than 21-13. Another performance like that next week against TCU, and the Longhorns will lose.
  • Cal - Cal made the biggest jump in the polls thanks to their win over Tennessee on Saturday night. For any SEC team or coach-Les Miles-who thinks that the Pac-10 doesn't have the same kind of speed the SEC does, I hope they saw DeSean Jackson and the Bears running away from the Vols all night. Don't go giving the Trojans the Pac-10 title just yet.
  • Virginia Tech - I knocked the Hokies down a few spots because my fears about Sean Glennon still haven't been answered. Glennon struggled against a good East Carolina defense, and he'll have to face LSU in Baton Rouge next Saturday night. It could get ugly for the Hokies.
  • Clemson - Clemson is the only new team on my ballot, thanks to their victory over Florida State Monday night. If they're going to win the ACC though, they'll have to develop more of a passing game. Don't get me wrong, I would just keep giving the ball to James Davis and C.J. Spiller too, but it's not going to work all season. Florida State nearly came back from a 21-point deficit when the Tigers running game came to a halt in the second half.
So what do you think? Any huge disagreements with my ballot? Please feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

As you can see, my ballot for week 2 of the preseason is the same as it was for week 1. The reason for this is obviously the fact that nobody has played a single game yet, so it's hard to argue for teams to move up or down.

Once the season starts in a couple of days though, then things are bound to change and I'll be happy to explain my actions. As for now, all I can say is this is what I think the Top 25 will look like come the end of this season.

Foul Balls Preseason Poll

I've always felt that preseason polls in college sports were somewhat pointless considering that nobody's played a game yet, but since I'm now a voter in the Blogger Poll at MGoBlog, I was asked to contribute my thoughts.

What follows is the ballot I submitted, and if you'd like to see the results of all the bloggers, check it out here.

Once the season actually starts, I'll explain my votes. As for now, this is just my best guess of how things will finish up this season, based on returning players from last season.
