Appalachian State Has Changed the World
Did you think that the ripple effect of Appalachian State's win over Michigan last weekend had run its course? Think again, my friend. Appalachian State has changed the world!
Or at least they've changed the world of how the Associated Press poll will work.
The Associated Press said Thursday that lower-division schools -- that means you, Mountaineers -- are now eligible for its 71-year-old poll.I understand the feeling. When I was submitting my ballot for the Blogpoll this week, I wanted to put Appalachian State at #1. Not because I really think they're the best team in the country, but because they're #1 in my heart.
"It's great they opened the door," Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore said. "Certainly we're not going to be the No. 1 team in the country. We know that. We're not even going to be in the top 10. But if you have a win over a nice football team, I like that it's not out of the realm of possibility for a school like us to be one of the top 20 or 25 teams in the country."
As for whether or not this will ever really have an impact on the AP Poll, I doubt it. There's a reason the Appalachian State win is such a huge story, and that's because things like this just don't happen. I doubt there's going to be a sudden run of Division II - sorry, I mean the Football Championship Subdivision - teams taking over the polls anytime soon.
Still, it would be nice to see Appalachian State in next week's poll should they win again this week.
