Grady Sizemore Placed On The DL

For a man that's only 26 years old and has only spent four years in the Major Leagues, Grady Sizemore has accomplished quite a lot. He had a fantastic 2008 season, one that many thought warranted an MVP award, and had a lot of people thinking the Indians were going to be the team to beat in the AL Central this season....

Carlos Quentin May Need Special Shoes

While the White Sox offense has finally started to show some life during the last week and the team has won six of their last eight games, they still can't be too pleased about the prospect of having to place Carlos Quentin on the disabled list. The man who might have been AL MVP last season if not for a broken wrist started off the season pretty nicely for the Sox, but has struggled recently while battling foot problems....

Scot Shields Placed On DL

With pitch counts becoming so important in recent years it seems as though starting pitchers are working less innings every year. These days if you can give your team six innings of solid work every start you're probably going to end up making a lot of money in baseball because the Roy Halladays of the world are very few and far between. Because of this bullpens are becoming more and more important for teams...

The Loop: Mother Nature Saves The Cubs

There was a little bit of Foul Balls incest going on yesterday when Panger hooked Silvio up with two tickets to last night's Cubs game, and it was an awfully sweet gesture by Panger. I mean, to give somebody two very nice seats to a Cubs game at no charge after they've lost eight in a row, and the forecast calls for rain that night, it takes a special person. Thankfully Panger rode the short bus to school.

Seriously though, I don't think Panger had any idea it was going to rain like it did. She's still getting used to this Chicago weather stuff after spending so many years in the land of wildfires known as California.

Silvio, like the brave soldier he is, got in his car and hydroplaned to Wrigley and was no doubt overcome with joy by the rains that began pouring down with the Cubs up 6-1 through six innings. Mother Nature's strong show of emotion allowed the Cubs to skip that part of the game where they hand the ball to a member of the bullpen and then proceed to watch that reliever blow the game, and they were given a rain-shortened victory to snap their losing streak.

A cheap win, sure, but I doubt there are any Cubs fans complaining.

Oh, and as if things couldn't get any better, the Cubs followed up their victory by calling up Jake Fox, Jason Waddell, and Andres Blanco while finally sending down Neal Cotts along with Bobby Scales. I'm sure most Cubs fans would have preferred to have Cotts taken out back and shot, but our damn Puritan society looks down on such behavior.

White Sox Win Again

Meanwhile, I'm doing everything I can to temper my feeling about the way the White Sox have been playing for the last week or so, but the fact of the matter is that Tuesday night's 4-2 win over the Angels was the best game I have seen the White Sox play this season. They only scored 4 runs, which was 4 more than I expected after Monday's 17-run outburst, but those were all the runs they'd need.

Bartolo Colon pitched well enough allowing only 4 hits in 6.2 innings and giving up two runs, but the most promising aspect of last night's game was the defense. The White Sox were throwin some leather out there last night, with some very nice plays coming from the middle infield of Alexei Ramirez and Jayson Nix.

Not only did Nix make some nice plays in the field, but he hit two homers off of Joe Saunders to boot and has put Chris Getz' job in serious jeopardy. With Scott Podsednik doing a nice job at the top of the order, that little run up thing he's doing in the batter's box is working well for him, and Alexei Ramirez settling in at #2, Nix fits in nicely at the #9 spot of the lineup. Sure, his average isn't that great, but he does bring some pop and seems to have a better glove than Getz. At this point, that's a trade off Ozzie Guillen will be thrilled to make.

As far as the team is concerned, there are other very good signs. For the third straight series the Sox have won the first two games, but unlike the first two against the Twins and Pirates, this time they did it on the road against a good team in the Angels.

I'm not saying they've turned things around or anything, but after being dead last in the AL in my power rankings this week, there's only one direction they can go. All I know is I'm a lot more optimistic about this team now than I was two weeks ago.

Blackhawks Against The Wall

Over the last month and a half I've been enjoying the Blackhawks playoff run quite a bit. Perhaps more pleasing than watching this team over that amount of time was not having to shave.

I tell you, playoff beards are a lazy man's dream, and they don't come much lazier than me.

Still, as much as I like not shaving, this beard of mine does get annoying at times. It itches a lot and I can constantly feel it whenever I make a facial expression. It also makes me look a lot older than I actually am, and considering I already have a ton of gray hair, I'm not really down with looking like I'm 40.

Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm quite ready to shave it off tonight. If the Blackhawks don't win Game 5 in Detroit tonight, though, odds are I will be. This beard and I have had some good times together, and I'm not sure I'm ready to say goodbye just yet.

Which is why it's such a good sign that Nikolai Khabibulin is ON THE ICE with the team this morning practicing. This doesn't mean he's going to play, but it does make it a possibility. I really don't have anything against Cristobal Huet, I know he played like crap on Sunday but the man hasn't really played since you could see my cherubic cheeks and he was good during the regular season, but the Hawks need Khabi at this point if they're going to survive.

As for Havlat's status, I'm not sure. I'm not expecting him to suit up tonight, but I didn't expect him to play on Sunday either, so who knows.

UPDATE: Nikolai Khabibulin may have skated with the team this morning but Joel Quenneville just said that it will be Cristobal Huet in goal tonight. Also, we know that Detroit will once again be without Niklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk.

UPDATE #2: Martin Havlat is also OUT tonight and will be replaced in the lineup by Colin Fraser.

David Stern Is Working The Officials Right Now

I know The Loop is generally confined to Chicago stuff, but I can't help but wonder how pissed off NBA commissioner David Stern is right now. For the last few months he's been masturbating to the idea of a Lakers-Cavaliers NBA Finals in which he could showcase Kobe vs. LeBron.

Hell, I know I've been looking forward to it as well along with any other brain carrying basketball fan, but now we sit here with the very likely scenario of a Denver vs. Orlando Finals.

You know that Denver and Orlando won't get a single close call go their way over the rest of the Conference Finals. Stern will do everything in his power to keep this from happening, and if that means holding Joey Crawford's family hostage, I wouldn't put it past him.

Everyone Is Out To Get Milton Bradley

Baseball players use a lot of different techniques to get themselves mentally prepared to do their jobs on a daily basis. Some of them read self-help books and do Stuart Smalley-style daily affirmations to remind themselves that they're good people and that people like them, and others convince themselves that everyone hates them and is out to get them. Milton Bradley falls into the latter category...

The Loop: The White Sox And Carlos Quentin's Foot Explode

In what can only be a response to finding out they were ranked dead last in the Foul Balls MLB Power Rankings on Monday the White Sox exploded last night against the Los Angeles Angels for 17 runs and 24 hits as they routed the Angels 17-3. More remarkable, only seven of those runs came via the long ball as Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome both had three-run bombs, and Paul Konerko added a solo shot.

The rest of the runs came from base hits and what not. On the road. I wasn't even sure which team I was watching last night.

As is usually the case when teams blow up like this, nobody in the lineup had a bad night. Scott Podsednik had four hits and reached base six times while Alexei Ramirez appears to be enjoying the warm weather. Alexei had four hits by the 4th inning.

In a single game the Sox raised their team batting average from .243 to .251.

John Danks was on the receiving end of all this run support, and he needed it. Sure, he only gave up three runs in six innings of work, but they weren't the most efficient six innings. Danks' control continued to be a problem as he walked six and threw 112 pitches, but he kept working his way out of trouble.

Of course, it wasn't all good news for the Sox. Carlos Quentin got involved in the hit parade with a hit in his first at bat, a double, but it would be his only at bat of the night after he had to hop into second base. It seems CQ aggravated his plantar fasciitis and he had to be helped off the field.

He's out until the weekend for sure, and maybe even longer. Personally I think they should just put him on the disabled list. He's tried to come back from the injury a few times, only to hurt it again, so maybe it's time Quentin stopped rushing himself back on the field. Let him take the next two weeks off and hopefully by then things have calmed down enough that he can actually play again.

Eight Is Enough

I don't know about you, but I think this eight-game losing streak is starting to get to the Cubs. During yesterday's game Ryan Dempster beat the hell out of a Gatorade cooler, Ted Lilly got ejected from the game even though he wasn't even pitching, and Milton Bradley homered and drove in four runs. Not wanting any day to go by where he only did something positive, Bradley then said that he was tricked into complaining about the umpires and their vendetta against him by the Chicago Tribune.

Somewhere in between all that Neal Cotts gave up a two-run homer and the lead to Nate McLouth, and the Cubs never recovered.

Back to the Lilly ejection though, because that really was the most humorous part of the night, Ted did not agree with home plate umpire Bob Davidson's called strike three on Jose Ascanio. So he let him know from the dugout and Davidson tossed him.

Lilly then ran onto the field to go after Davidson and had to be restrained by members of the Cubs coaching staff.

"I asked him if he could concentrate back there, and he pretty much told me he could do whatever he wanted," Lilly said. "I think that got me upset when that was his message."

"He might have touched me, but I didn't touch him. I'm not going to hold it against him. Maybe he was doing the best job he could."

This team really needs a win. Bad.

Ben Gordon Wanted To Stay

We already know that Ben Gordon has turned down two multi-year offers from the Bulls over the last two summers only to settle on one-year deals each time. What we didn't know until Jerry Reinsdorf did an interview on ESPN1000 over the weekend was that at one point Gordon wanted to sign the multi-year offer but the Bulls had pulled the offer from the table at that point.

"He was prepared to sign last year at the end, but after he turned down our offer, we thought about it and thought about it and decided it was in our best interest just to go one year with Ben," Reinsdorf said. "We informed him of that, at which time his agent came back and said, 'We'll take your prior offer.' We said it was too late. It's off the table.

"We'll have decisions to make at the draft. It depends on who we take, whether we trade our picks or we trade other players. Where we're going with Ben can't be decided until after July 1."

So it looks like Gordon knew then that he wasn't going to get a better offer anywhere else and he'll probably come to that conclusion again this summer.

Foul Balls MLB Power Rankings Week 5

Every Friday on Foul Balls I post my MLB Power Rankings which I use a formula based on a team's play and statistics to look past their win-loss records and figure out which team is really the best in each league. Of course, they don't really mean anything, but maybe they can get some conversation going

I know I've been slacking on these the last few weeks but between changes at work and my body continuing to fall apart, they kind of fell to the back burner. But it's Memorial Day now, and damn it, if our soldiers can fight in wars to let me keep my right to watch baseball, then the least I can do is put out some Power Rankings.

Plus it helps take my mind off of the shellacking the Blackhawks took on Sunday afternoon for a few moments at least, and I'm doing my best to put that ugliness behind me. Oh, hey, Cristobal Huet just watched another puck go by him without even making an effort to stop it.

Cool.

Let's just get onto the rank...DETROIT SCORED AGAIN...rankings. These rankings are through Sunday's games and don't include anything from Memorial Day.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
  1. Texas Rangers
  2. Toronto Blue Jays
  3. Detroit Tigers
  4. Boston Red Sox
  5. Tampa Bay Rays
  6. New York Yankees
  7. Los Angeles Angels
  8. Minnesota Twins
  9. Kansas City Royals
  10. Seattle Mariners
  11. Cleveland Indians
  12. Oakland Athletics
  13. Baltimore Orioles
  14. Chicago White Sox
Yes, the White Sox really are the worst team in the American League right now, it's not just your imagination. Things were looking pretty good for a few days, and we're one bad inning from Bobby Jenks away from winning 5 of 6, but that 20-1 beating did hurt a bit.

Elsewhere we do have a new top team in the AL, and it's the Texas Rangers. I just hope that my FanHouse colleagues Matt Snyder and Will Brinson see this because they've been talking about the Rangers for a few months now, and I'd hate for them to have any validation.

Elsewhere the Blue Jays slip to second. They're still playing very good baseball, but they've come back down to Earth a bit. The Royals dropped pretty far the last few weeks as reality is finally starting to catch up to them a bit as well.

Also, I know I've been saying a lot this season about how horrible the AL Central is and that if you finish .500 you have a shot to win it, but the Tigers are quickly putting that theory to rest. They're playing like the team we all thought they'd be last season, and to be honest, even though it isn't June yet, I don't see them relenting that lead.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
  1. Los Angeles Dodgers
  2. St. Louis Cardinals
  3. Milwaukee Brewers
  4. New York Mets
  5. Atlanta Braves
  6. Cincinnati Reds
  7. Philadelphia Phillies
  8. Pittsburgh Pirates
  9. San Diego Padres
  10. Chicago Cubs
  11. Arizona Diamondbacks
  12. Colorado Rockies
  13. San Francisco Giants
  14. Houston Astros
  15. Washington Nationals
  16. Florida Marlins
Manny or no Manny, the Dodgers still reign supreme on the senior circuit. They continue to hit well, pitch well (though it's tailing off) and field the ball better than anybody, which leads to a lot of wins. They've also got a run differential of +70 which is somewhat ridiculous this early in the season.

The biggest surprise looking at these rankings is the fact that the Mets and Braves are both ranked higher than the Phillies even though Philadelphia leads their division. This is because the Phillies pitching has been pretty terrible so far this season, and the offense hasn't been amazing. They're basically winning with smoke and mirrors at this point.

Finally, how about those Marlins? When I first did these rankings they were at the very top of baseball, and now, when I combine both leagues they're coming in at dead last at 30th. Yes, 29th is the White Sox. Joy!

OVERALL TOP TEN
  1. Los Angeles Dodgers
  2. Texas Rangers
  3. Toronto Blue Jays
  4. Detroit Tigers
  5. St. Louis Cardinals
  6. Milwaukee Brewers
  7. New York Mets
  8. Atlanta Braves
  9. Boston Red Sox
  10. Cincinnati Reds
Finally one league claims more spots in the top ten as the National League squeezes six in as the Reds finish just ahead of Tampa Bay. Still, as I've told you, my formula tends to favor NL teams yet still three of the top four teams come from the AL.

I'll let you figure that out.

Jake Peavy Rejects Trade To Sox

Report: Peavy Deal 'Unlikely'

Have you heard? The White Sox and Padres have agreed to a deal that would send Jake Peavy to Chicago for what is being reported as four players, two of which are believed to be Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda. The teams have agreed to the deal and now the only thing we need to sit around and wait for is Jake Peavy's approval...

Jake Peavy To The South Side?

It's been rumored that San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy has been coming to Chicago for quite a while now after the Cubs tried to work out a deal for the Cy Young Award winner over the summer, but apparently it's not the Cubs who may be landing him. As you've no doubt heard by now, it seems that the White Sox and Padres have come to an agreement on a trade that would bring Peavy to the White Sox, and now we're just sitting around waiting to see if Peavy will approve the deal.
According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox.

Peavy, whose consent would be needed for a trade to any club, declined all comment after meeting with Black.

Within the clubhouse, though, Peavy referred to the situation as “something to think about” yet also restated his desire to stay in the National League. One of Peavy's teammates said he believes Peavy respects the Sox's aggressiveness in pushing for him but may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox's volatile manager.

Why the reservations about playing for Guillen? Anybody who has watched this team knows he's been pretty good to his pitchers, sometimes to a fault.

Obviously, even though I'm not sure who exactly the four players the Sox would supposedly be sending to San Diego are, if this deal goes through it will go a long way in making me feel better about the Sox' chances this season.

They've played better the last two days, which I'll admit is nice, but putting Peavy in the rotation will give us the best one in the AL Central.

Playoff Beards Save Lives

This was no doubt the scariest moment of Game 1 yesterday, when Adam Burish was on the receiving end of Ben Eager's skate slicing AGAINST HIS THROAT.

I remember when the initial hit took place and I saw Eager's skate fly by Burish's head.  I just thought his skate just missed contacting Burish, and then NBC was kind enough to show the replay.

Jaysus.

The Loop: The Wings Are Pretty Good, Huh?

When they were playing the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks through the first two rounds of the playoffs, the young Blackhawks made plenty of mistakes during games. They committed a few too many turnovers at times, but thanks to their overwhelming edge in talent, they were able to overcome their errors.

On Sunday afternoon they learned that they're not going to get away with them against the Detroit Red Wings. If you watched yesterday's first game then you now realize why I didn't want to face the Red Wings over the Ducks. As overwhelming an offensive attack as the one the Hawks are able to muster at times, the Red Wings can more than match them as we saw both teams flying up and down the
ice on Sunday afternoon.

The difference was that when the Red Wings came up the ice they generally
held on to the puck. Too many times the Hawks did not.

Now don't take all of this as a "OMG we lost and there's no way we're going to beat Detroit!" type of post-loss prattle. I still think the Red Wings will win this series, as I have the whole time, but I also still believe the Hawks can beat them as well.

It's just that if they don't play a lot better than they did in Game 1 they won't have a chance and it could be over a lot quicker than I thought.

Bears Interested In Plaxico

The Bears held their Bears Expo yesterday, and while fans all fawned over Jaysus, the most common question asked of Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo on Sunday were about who Cutler would throw to. More specifically if there were any receivers still left out there that the team was considering.

One of those receivers is former New York Giant and self-inflicted gunshot wounder Plaxico Burress.

As he always does in these situations, Angelo just said they've considered it.

"As I said, we'll look at every option," Angelo said. "[His] situation is different because there are circumstances. We'll monitor it."

Gee, what circumstances could they be monitoring?

There's no question that Plaxico is a very talented player, and we all got to see how the Giants offense struggled without him last season, so he could help the Bears on offense. The problems are obviously his off the field issues and the fact that he always seems to cause trouble wherever he goes.

Personally, I could deal with the off the field stuff as long as he shows up to play every Sunday. I mean, everything he does from Tuesday through Saturday just give me material to write about, and I'm incredibly selfish, so signing him would probably work out well for me.

Illini Lineman In A Bar Fight

I spent two years in Champaign and I've often said that they were the two best years of my life. They were also the drunkest as I generally spent six nights a week either at the bar or a house party. So needless to say, if there was a bar in Champaign or Urbana during my ye
ars there, I drank there.

One of those bars was Kams, which is one of the more popular spots in the town, but also my least favorite. Frankly the place was usually filled with douchebags and it constantly smelled like a mixture of puke, sawdust, and regret. Foul Balls' own Silvio is partially responsible for the vomit smell.

We're very proud.

Anyway, Kams always was pretty popular with the football players as well, and it seems it still is because Illini lineman are getting into fights there.
Mike Garrity, 19, of Batavia, has been charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery, according to court records.

Police say the alleged incident occurred at about 1:55 a.m. Friday at Kam's, Home of the Drinking Illini, 618 E. Daniels St. The altercation stemmed from an argument in which, according to one witness account, the victim allegedly was harassing some women at the bar, said Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn.

The women then told Garrity of the harassment and Garrity and the victim confronted each other, Dunn said. A witness told police that the victim struck Garrity first.

"According to one witness, the victim got in Mike's face and yelled at him and hit him with his fist," Dunn said. "Michael told him he needed to back off. [The victim] continued to yell and [Garrity] allegedly hit him."

The victim was taken to a local hospital with serious head injuries.
And they say chivalry is dead.

Paul Konerko Is Captain Obvious

The White Sox are off to a 15-18 start to the 2009 season, and that record is pretty misleading. The fact of the matter is that the White Sox have played a lot worse than their record would indicate. They're at or near the bottom of the American League in any significant offensive, defensive, or pitching stat that's kept. They were also shut out for an MLB-leading sixth time on Wednesday afternoon, and as Fletch mentioned it in the Starting Five on Monday, when they lose, they lose big. They've now been outscored 125-39 in their 18 losses...

The Loop: Joakim's Doin It Big

After their amazing series against the Boston Celtics in the playoffs this year, odds are more people around the United States are going to start recognizing the Chicago Bulls. The series garnered a lot of attention, and the Bulls not only made a name for themselves within the NBA ranks, but also with the more casual fan.

No doubt the one member of the Bulls who will stand out is Joakim Noah, and not just for that dunk on Paul Pierce to help finish off Game 6. No, Joakim will be getting that attention because he's big, loud, and really goofy looking. Still, something tells me that if the Bulls were expecting any new found fame they didn't think it would be coming from the likes of TMZ.

TMZ usually spends its time following Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan around, praying for that shot of the latest socialite to forget her underwear, but now it seems Noah has become a target of the paparazzi.

At least that's what these pictures from Joakim's recent trip to St. Barts would lead you to believe.

Of course, the pictures that will get the most attention are these.

I'm not going to judge Noah for any of this because he's a 24-year old millionaire, and if I were one I'd be spending a bunch of time on a beach with fake breasts myself. I would like to remind him that his mommy sees him, though, and that she loves him too.

Oh, and your move, Mr. Cutler.

The White Sox Suck

I mentioned in a Loop last week that baseball in Chicago is pretty boring right now. With the combination of the playoffs and higher expectations for our baseball teams after recent success, April and May baseball just doesn't satiate the palate like it once used to.

I now realize that this is a bunch of crap. The reason I'm bored by baseball right now is because the White Sox suck. Hard.

They were shut out for the Major League-leading sixth time on Wednesday afternoon and lost two of three to their series against the Cleveland Indians. Also known as the team with the worst record in baseball.

Here are some of the Sox' team rankings in the 14-team American League right now.
  • 14th in runs at 136
  • 13th in hits at 278
  • 13th in average at .251
  • 12th in OBP at .321
  • 7th in ERA at 4.66
  • 10th in average against at .275
  • 12th in WHIP at 1.53
  • 4th in errors with 23
  • 13th in fielding percentage at .981
Now, as Hawk Harrelson would be quick to remind you of, sometimes numbers in baseball can be misleading. These numbers do not mislead. The Sox can't hit, they can't pitch, and they can't field.

The most amazing thing about all of this is how horrible they've played and yet they're still only 3 games under .500 and 2.5 games out of first place. That's how bad the AL Central is.

Ron Zook Is A Beast

Now I'm not entirely sure why he did it, but the Orlando Sentinel's Jeremy Fowler decided to come up with a list of the five fittest coaches in college football. Needless to say, Charlie Weis did not make the list, but another Chicago-areaish college coach was.

Illinois' Ron Zook was named as the most physically fit coach in the NCAA.
1. Ron Zook, Illinois: Look at those pipes. Zook is known to bench more than 300 pounds even at age 55, sporting more muscle than most coaches who are either fat or skinny.
USC's Pete Carroll finished in 2nd, with Jim Harbaugh (Stanford, receiving end of Mike Ditka's spit), Larry Fedora (Southern Miss) and Randy Shannon (Miami) rounding out the top five.

You should have absolutely no doubts that Zook will mention this to recruits.
