Are The White Sox Close to Trading Paul Konerko for Adrian Gonzalez? - UPDATE
I didn't see the original report this morning, but apparently there's a rumor going around of a three-way trade between the White Sox, Padres and Angels. The gist of which being that Paul Konerko and a couple of Sox prospects are going to be shipped out and Adrian Gonzalez will be coming to Chicago.
A deal that seems almost too good to be true.
Here's what SoxNet had to say about it this morning.
SoxNet.net has learned that the Chicago White Sox have had preliminary discussions with the Anaheim Angels and San Diego Padres on a potential 3 way deal which would involve Paul Konerko, Adrian Gonzalez, and Angel and White Sox prospects. SoxNet.net is not aware of the specifics of the trade (ie, names of prospects and exact details as to how many prospects, etc) but the discussions are built on the Sox sending Konerko and prospects in-return for Adrian Gonzalez. The Angels would receive Konerko with the Padres receiving a combination of Sox and Angel prospects.Again, I have no idea of whether or not this is a real deal being discussed or just pure speculation. I just know that I asked Ed Price if he had heard of anything, and he said he's going to make some calls. The second he gets back to me on anything he's learned, I'll share it here.
We want to re-iterate that our sources, which we consider to be very reliable, have inidicated that the teams have had preliminary discussions. In no way, shape or form, are we reporting this as a done deal or a close to done deal.
Obviously, if the deal did go through this would be a huge win for the White Sox. They've be getting a left-handed, Gold Glove first baseman with power to all fields all while shedding the $12 million due to Konerko this season. Which would provide some financial flexibility for Kenny Williams and the team in 2010.
Though some of that extra cash would no doubt go towards signing Gonzalez to an extension.
UPDATE: FanHouse's Jeff Fletcher just let me know -- and Tweeted -- that he contacted a source with the Padres who immediately replied to him that the team has had "no such discussions." So I guess we can all stop wetting our pants now.

Holy shit. Yes please.
The denial doesn't mean a thing. It's pretty much automatic for a sports team to deny trade rumors like this even an hour before the trade goes down.
So resume wetting yourselves.
Damon,
While that's true, Fletch tells me that this Padres source he's talked to usually just ignores his calls or texts when something really is going down.
He says the fact he responded so quickly to him this time makes him believe that there really is nothing going on here.
