The Chicago Blackhawks have been playing hockey since 1926. They're one of the original six franchises in the NHL. Yet in the entire history of the Blackhawks organization, never had they come back from a 5-goal deficit in a game. That is, until this happened.
The Flames were out for revenge on Monday night after the Blackhawks knocked them out of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, and it showed early. Calgary had racked up five goals in the first 12 minutes to take the 5-0 lead, but then they just stopped playing.
After that the Hawks chipped away with John Madden's first goal as a Blackhawk before the 1st period ended. Then Patrick Kane took over the 2nd period with a goal and two assists to cut the lead to 5-4 before Patrick Sharp redirected a Duncan Keith slapshot to tie it at 5-5 in the third.
Seabrook would in it 26 seconds into overtime.
It was an incredible game to watch, and one I nearly gave up on, but I'm happy I didn't. Still, while the comeback was amazing, I'm still not exactly thrilled.
In fact, I'm worried.
Worried about Cristobal Huet who has done absolutely nothing since taking over for Nikolai Khabibulin in the Western Conference Finals last summer to make me confident he can lead this team to a Stanley Cup. I know the offense is amazing, and will get even better when Marian Hossa gets on the ice, but they're not going to score 6 goals a night.
I know it's early in the season, but Huet's giving up 2.87 goals a game and that doesn't even tell the whole story. If the Hawks actually let the other team shoot once in a while, he'd probably be giving up about 4.
After all, his .864 save percentage is what tells the real story.
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer to see a lot more of Antti Niemi during the coming weeks. He posted a shutout in his first start of the season against Florida while in Finland, and he did a nice job last night after replacing Huet in the first period.
Yeah, he gave up two goals but one was a bit of a fluke, and I feel more confident with him in the net right now than I do the Frog.
