Shortly after the White Sox lost in Minnesota last night it was announced that Jim Thome had been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Jose Contreras was on his way to the Colorado Rockies. Both go from a team who have nothing left to play for to playoff contenders. Though now that the Rockies have Contreras, that probably makes them underdogs.
The only reason I can see the Dodgers trading for Thome would be to use him as a pinch-hitter, because I really don't think they have any plans to play him at first base. If nothing else it gives Jimmy a chance to finally win a World Series.
Thome came to Chicago from Philadelphia as the first thing Kenny Williams did after the Sox won the World Series in 2005. Thome had an excellent four years on the south side with 134 home runs -- including number 500 -- and 369 runs driven in. There's just no need for him here anymore, as the Sox could use the money in free agency to address many needs.
I wish he could have gotten that ring here.
Then, of course, there
's Jose Contreras.Jose has driven me absolutely insane the last few years. Pitching horribly, then picking apart the Royals and earning another start before pitching horribly again.
When you're pitching well, you're fun to watch and you just haven't been fun to watch in a while. I have never been a fast man in my life, yet I'm pretty sure I can steal second base on you.
Especially with A.J. back there.
But you were amazing during the second half of 2005, and in to 2006, and I'll never forget those games. Thank you for helping bring a World Series title to my life. If spending my life in Chicago has taught me anything it's that those are very rare achievements that should be cherished.
Thank you.

As for the players remaining with the team, well, enjoy September boys. Pad some stats, collect some checks, and try to finish on a positive note. Hell, shock the world and go on a run to storm into the playoffs.
Use this as motiv..ah, screw it.
Just pad the stats.
Particularly you, Mr. Dye. If you haven't figured it out yet, the team isn't planning on bringing you back next season. They got Rios and his contract earlier this month and they sent out a league wide memo today that said "Anybody want Jermaine Dye for some random minor leaguer?"
You've struggled mightily since Rios came to town -- JD's cruising along at .210 with a homer and 5 runs driven in since August 10th -- but now that the playoffs are out of the question, there's no pressure.
See ball. Hit ball.
That's it.
Give us a thrill on your way out of town. For old times sake.
