Quick Free Agency Update

I'm spending my entire day before heading into work tonight with my ears to the ground listening for rumors on Blackhawks and Bulls free agents. Here's what I know so far, and remember nothing is concrete.

  • Ben Gordon is in Detroit, which you already knew, but he could have a deal done with them by the end of the day.
  • There is nothing new on Martin Havlat, just that the deadline for exclusive signing rights passed last night, and he's now on the open market. Word is the Hawks are offering him a one-year deal. So if somebody else comes along with a multi-year offer, he's probably gone.
  • The Hawks are still talking to Nikolai Khabibulin. If you heard the rumor that he signed a two-year deal -- which I posted briefly here -- disregard it. Somebody started a fake Twitter account for Puck Daddy's Greg Whyshynski and is just making stuff up.
  • The Hawks are also in close negotiations with free agent Marian Hossa who helped the Detroit Red Wings get by the Hawks and into the Stanley Cup Finals this year. Needless to say, if Havlat does leave town, landing Hossa would definitely soothe that sting. The Fourth Period is reporting now that the deal is done.
  • Hawks defenseman Matt Walker is now former Hawks defenseman Matt Walker as he's agreed on a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
