Finally. After a Bulls season that was filled with nothing but frustration, and a coaching search that has gone much the same way, Chicago finally got a little lucky on Tuesday night. Despite having only a 1.7% chance of winning the NBA draft lottery, the Bulls ended up with the first pick in this summer's draft.
I was at work last night while the lottery was going on when my friend Greg sent me a text saying "We're in the top three." I replied with "Fuck you." A minute later Greg told me he was serious, and then a few more minutes after that I got the text that said "First pick!"
I didn't believe it, and after the way things have gone this past year for the Bulls and the rest of Chicago's sports teams, how could I?
It's true, though, and now the question is who do the Bulls draft: Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley?
My initial reaction is that I'd rather have Derrick Rose, but both players fill a need for the Bulls. So no matter who the Bulls take, I'll be happy with the pick. I'm leaning towards Rose though because the NBA has become a little man's league the last few years. Steve Nash was winning MVP's, and Chris Paul nearly won it this season.
Point guards are infinitely valuable in this league, and despite the fact the Bulls have 32 guards on the roster right now, none of them are real point guards.
Still, it's hard to pass on a big man like Beasley who not only cleans the boards, but unlike our recent frontcourt draft picks--Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas--he can actually put the ball in the basket.
So much like John Paxson right now, I don't know what I would do with it. It doesn't matter, though. There's plenty of time to figure that out, and for right now, I just want to revel in the fact that something finally went right around here.
