Is Jhonny Peralta About to Lose His Job?
You saw a glimpse of it earlier, thanks to Will's posting of Asdrubal Cabrera's unassisted triple-play on Monday, but that's not the only play Cabrera has made for the Indians in the field this season. His defense, be it at second base or at shortstop, has been hard not to notice. Particularly the last few days when Asdrubal filled in for the struggling Jhonny Peralta at short.
The difference between Cabrera and Peralta in the field is hard to miss. Asdrubal has more range to his left and right, and this was evident on quite a few plays over the weekend...

I was born in Akron, Ohio and have been a Cleveland fan all my life. Nobody in this era compares to Omar Vizquel defensively at shortstop even though there are some good shortstops out there. Shortstop has become more of an offensive position. Asdrubal Cabrera is a very good defensive middle infielder and he would be a major upgrade over Peralta defensively. But I like Jhonny Peralta and his offense at the shortstop position is hard to replace for anyone on any team. There are only a number of shortstops who have the power that Peralta has and his batting average and RBI potential continue to rise. I don't think he will finish his career a shortstop but he is not horrible defensively compared to other shortstop starting in this league. As long as he continues to develop offensively, I don't think there is anything that will keep him out of a lineup. He may strikeout and not walk a lot but you have to keep him in the lineup and where else do you play him? He's no better at third. So until Asdrubal Cabrera hits consistently (like I think he can) don’t move Peralta. We will see if Josh Barfield is the very good player he looks like he can be. If so, some thing's got to give. That Asdrubal triple play was awesome. But Peralta is only 26 years old with 19 HRs, 33 doubles, 64 RBIs and he is hitting .281in 106 games. I know its an old post but it’s a nice post. Hope you Chicago fans enjoy this year, but the Indians will be back in contention next year.
