Why Do The Cubs Hate Matt Murton?
Seriously, did he sleep with Jim Hendry's wife or something?
I didn't have time to address this yesterday, but when I found out the Cubs had brought up Eric Patterson to take Alfonso Soriano's spot on the roster yesterday, I was dumbfounded. Well, that's probably not the best word because as any Cubs or White Sox fan knows, the Cubs will always find ways to make you shake your head.
Let's take a look at the logic behind this move. The Cubs lost their starting left fielder for a few weeks because for some idiotic reason, he feels the need to hop as he makes a catch. So let's bring up another middle infielder when we already have four on the roster, and we'll move our current second baseman to left field! It makes so much sense!
Meanwhile, we'll just let Matt Murton rot in Iowa and pray somebody takes this cursed bastard off our hands.
Does this make sense to anybody?
I know Murton isn't the greatest defensive left fielder in the world, but neither is Soriano (aside from that cannon) and how good can DeRosa be out there? So if defense is a wash, let's look at the offensive output of both Murton and Patterson so far this season in Triple-A.
Murton is hitting .333 with an OBP of .458.
Patterson's hitting .222 with a .282 OBP.
Seriously. What. The. Fuck?
The only time you hear the Cubs talking about Matt Murton is when they're on the phone with another team trying to trade him. Well, if you're so set on trading him, doesn't it make more sense to bring him up and showcase him for other teams? He's a lot easier for other GM's to see when he's in Chicago than when he's playing in a cornfield in Iowa.
It just makes absolutely no sense to me. (And judging by the results to today's poll question, it doesn't make any sense to you, either.)
