Morning Wood

Minnesota Twins 12 Chicago White Sox 5

See, this is why I hate that damn day off between the home opener and the next game. I understand why they do it, after all, it did rain all day on Tuesday, but it still pisses me off. All that momentum the Sox built up before Tuesday was washed away in the rain, as the Twins singled the Sox and John Danks to absolute death before Jason Kubel's grand slam in the 6th inning blew things open. "I just wonder how they're going to show up tomorrow," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "(Thursday) is a big day for us just because of the way we got beat today." Nick Swisher, Paul Konerko, and Joe Crede all homered for the Sox, but unfortunately there wasn't anybody on base when they did.

Chicago Cubs 6 Pittsburgh Pirates 4 15 Inn.

What? The 12 innings these two teams played against each other on Monday wasn't enough, they decided to go for 15 last night? The Cubs scored two runs in the 14th inning, but Adam LaRoche hit a two-run blast for the Pirates in their half to tie the game back up. Then Felix Pie singled home two runs in the 15th inning, and the Cubs were able to hold on to pick up the win. "This is two games in a row where we've gone through just about everybody. But they have, too," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "They've been two tough ballgames and fortunately for us, we came out on top of both of them."

Detroit Tigers 7 Boston Red Sox 2

Oh man, the dream of seeing the Tigers go 0-162 came to an end last night as they somehow managed to scrape together enough runs to beat the Red Sox. Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen both homered for Detroit, and Ivan Rodriguez picked up the 2,500th hit of his career in the victory. "It's a little crazy to be too giddy if you're 7-1 or 8-1 or too, too down if you're 0-7," Leyland said. "Was I surprised? Yeah, absolutely. I can't deny that. But it happened. There's a lot of games left."

What a series so far...27 innings for only 2 games!

I had a seat at the very end of the left-center bleachers, 3rd row (it was so empty I could have sat wherever). The relievers all looked over at us occasionally as if we were from the planet X and then as if they were gorillas and we weren't allowed to feed them, like at the Zoo. I saw Marshall sitting there to my surprise and later got the nerve to ask him, "Marshall, did you get called up today or yesterday?" He pointed to the ground and said, "today." To which, I replied, "Awesome, glad to have you back." He finished up our deep conversation with, "Thanks".

There were a bunch of Phillies fans heckling the Cubs bullpen most of the night (No, I don't know why stupid Phillies fans were at a Pirates game...), and Jon Lieber apparently got annoyed, because he told the guard stationed in the bullpen something and pointed at those annoying bastards. The guard jumped up, called security, and those losers were out of there in a New York minute.

There was a father and a kid that couldn't have been older than 4 years old that walked down by my seats. They were Pirates fans and didn't appear to know much about who was who. I figured they wanted the famous folk, so I pointed out that Kerry Wood was that beast of a man sitting on the chair facing us, but looking dejected down at the floor (this is about the 6th inning or so). He got his boy to say "Hi Kerry!" and Kerry looked up as if it was Christmas morning and waved to the little tyke immediately. Then the little guy asked for a ball, and Kerry nodded and said, "sure." He jumped up from his seat an instant latter and spent about 5 minutes rummaging around for a spare ball and threw it over the fence for the kid. That little kid will have quite a story to tell his kids someday. Kerry Wood, what a class act.

I forget his name now because I'm too tired to look it up, but the Hispanic bullpen catcher walked up by my seat just beyond the wall to toss me a ball at the very end of the night. I think he was trying to say thanks for sticking with them the entire game in the annoying masses of Pirates fans. I'm also sort of a loud-mouth and I was starting loud chants of "LETS GO CUB-BIES" pretty much from the 8th inning on through the end of the game. It was just sort of cool for me, that's all.

I also told nearly every Pittsburgh reliever "no pressure man, NO PRESSURE!" as they walked through the door onto the field right next to me. It probably did nothing, but it got a good laugh from all surrounding me.

Jay, sounds like fun, that should have been a post. Wait a minute, new feature idea, "Up in the Stands: Commenter Experiences at the Game." Whaddya say, Fornelli?

I say if you go to a game and have some good stories to share from it, send me an email when you get home and I'll post the mofo.

I go to every Cubs game in Pittsburgh, so I'll let you know if I experience anything cool like sitting in amazement of Kerry Wood's beard like last night.
