Morning Wood - Sweeps Weekend

Boston Red Sox 9 Los Angeles Angels 1

I think when TBS paid all that money to get the divisional round of the playoffs, they were probably hoping they'd get a chance to show a few more games. The Red Sox followed the lead of Arizona and Colorado and finished off their sweep of the Angels on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim. Big Papi and Manny Ramirez (I don't think Manny's has landed yet; he killed that thing) went back-to-back in the 4th inning to give Boston a 2-0 lead, and those were all the runs Curt Schilling and company would need. I picked the Angels to take it all at the beginning of the season, so when the playoffs started, I had to take them again. Unfortunately, all the injuries caught up to them, and against a team as good as Boston, they couldn't overcome them. Of course, don't tell that to Mike Scioscia. "This series wasn't lost on injuries, it's part of any season, guys are going to get hurt," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We got hit by some of ours at the wrong time. That's baseball. You're not going to look back and make excuses. Those guys went out there and beat us, and that's the bottom line."

New York Yankees 8 Cleveland Indians 4

What's this? A series that's going to a fourth game? It looked like we were going to have our fourth sweep when the Indians chased Roger Clemens out after only three innings (a short outing from Clemens in the postseason!? Never seen that before) and taking a 3-0 lead. But the Yankees would respond with a seven-run explosion in the 5th and 6th innings, led by a three-run blast by Johnny Damon. Not only are the Yankees trying to come back from a 2-0 deficit, apparently they're trying to save their manager. George Steinbrenner rose from the dead long enough this week to intimate that Joe Torre might get fired if the Yankees lose this series. "We all love Joe Torre, and we would love for him to win another championship," Damon said. "I think Joe Torre is a guy who commands a lot of respect. He's meant so much to the Yankee organization. And, you know, we get to play for him at least another day and, hopefully, longer."
