Morning Wood - The Lead is Dwindling

Los Angeles Dodgers 6 Chicago Cubs 2

It only took eight years, but Cubs fans finally got to see Steve Trachsel lose another game in a Cubs uniform. To be fair, Trachsel pitched well, allowing only 3 runs in 6 innings, but it wasn't good enough. Brad Penny shut the Cubs down for seven innings, with some help from his defense. How does a team that has two runners thrown out at the plate, one picked off of first, and another forced out at second on a blooper to the outfield end up winning a game? Easy, they forced the Cubs to ground into four double plays, and then watch them line into a fifth in the 9th inning. It's down to a half-game lead....

Chicago White Sox 3 Detroit Tigers 1

Don't look now, but the White Sox have won two games in a row. All they have to do now is win every game for the rest of the season, and they can totally finish in third place! On the bright side, at least they're contributing to the fall of the Tigers. Another plus was Jon Garland's performance, who looked more like the Garland of old than the one we've seen lately. "That's the Jon Garland who won 18 games [in 2005, and 2006], you got it tonight," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Pitching to early contact, was aggressive to the plate. That's the way he's been pitching for me for a long time."
