Morning Wood: Meet the Barrys
San Diego Padres 7 San Francisco Giants 0
Barry Zito got shown up in his debut as a San Francisco Giant. Jake Peavy and the Padres shut the Giants down, as Peavy went 6 scoreless innings as the Padres posted their first Opening Day shutout in team history. "That's the way you draw it up," Peavy said. "Put some zeros on the board and make it hold up. That's a good day. I feel healthy. That's the biggest thing for me." Zito on the other hand allowed two earned runs in five innings, but got no help from his best bud Barry Bonds and the rest of the offense. Bonds went 1-for-3 with a single, but he reminded us all that at one time he was a dual threat. After singling, Bonds stole second base.
Minnesota Twins 3 Baltimore Orioles 2
Monday, the Twins beat the Orioles with power and atomic elbows, and yesterday it was the piranhas' turn. Jason Bartlett's broken bat single in the seventh inning brought home the game-winning run, and after that the bullpen did what the Twins bullpen always does. They put the Orioles to bed. "We love it. We hit the long ball last night, and tonight we're stealing bases and hitting balls in the infield. It's great. We play the game," said starting pitcher Boof Bonser.
Pittsburgh Pirates 3 Houston Astros 2
This game looked eerily like Monday's battle between these teams, but luckily for Brad Lidge his teammate Dan Wheeler saved him the embarrassment of blowing his second consecutive save. Wheeler gave up two runs in the 8th inning, including the game winning hit to Xavier Nady. Nady also hit the home run against Lidge on Monday night to send the game to extra innings. Pirates starter Ian Snell set a career high with 11 strikouts. The Pirates are 2-0, and they're going undefeated folks.
